Wildfires in U.S. Burning Over One Million Acres

As of July 20, the United States was grappling with 83 large wildfires that have burned 1,293,636 acres in 13 states so far, according to the National Interagency Fire Center.

The largest wildfire in the United States, known as the Bootleg Fire, had charred 227,235 acres in southern Oregon and was only seven percent contained as of July 16, with more evacuations underway. There are nine wildfires burning in Oregon, which is getting help from California as it battles the blazes. California Gov. Gavin Newsom said, “Climate change impacts are contributing to wildfires that are increasingly dangerous and destructive across the Western United States.”
