New national advisory group brings together rising professionals to drive innovation in a transforming industry

WASHINGTON, D.C., July 23, 2025 — The National Association of Professional Insurance Agents (PIA) today announced the launch of its Ascending Leaders Council, a select group of next-generation independent agents who will meet regularly to identify the obstacles new agents face and advise on information and solutions that help them thrive. The Council will focus on fast-moving trends—including market volatility, emerging technology, and shifting customer expectations—while championing agency culture priorities such as professional development, mentorship, and flexibility.

“Tomorrow’s agency owners and employees need a space to share ideas and accelerate professional growth while, at the same time, bringing their insights to PIA,” said Vonda Copeland, National Director for Kansas PIA and Executive Committee Liaison to the Council. “The Ascending Leaders Council will be an important catalyst for change, equipping rising professionals with insights, resources, and the confidence to guide and motivate others.”

Council members will address pressing topics such as client engagement in a digital world, professional development, attracting and retaining talent, and the evolving expectations of the insurance consumer.

“Agents coming into this industry today are juggling new tools, new demands, and new opportunities,” said Staci Shearon, Executive Vice President of PIA of Arkansas and a founding executive for the Council. “This group is about making sure new agents are supported with a network of peers who share their passion for the business.”

Members will serve three-year terms and include:

  • Kathleen Bailey, The Russell Agency LLC, Southport, CT
  • Joel Dunham, Ovation Insurance, Fort Wayne, IN
  • Brody Hjelmstad, Hjelmstad Insurance Agency, Thompson, ND
  • Jessica Miller, Gallagher, Hammond, LA
  • David Gorman, Red Gorman Insurance, Dallas, TX
  • Tim Latimer, JS Braddock Agency, Medford, NJ
  • Logan Wood, Gordon Wood Insurance & Financial Services, Roseburg, OR

The Council’s first projects will delve into best practices for onboarding new producers and CSRs, leveraging data and automation tools, and building cultures that resonate with Gen Z and millennial employees.
